Word to Markdown Converter
Turn a .docx file, or text copied from Word, into clean Markdown
Drop a .docx file here or use Open file.
The result appears here as you type or paste.
Converted in this browser tab. Nothing leaves your device and nothing is kept unless you choose “Open in Markdown editor”.
From a Word document to Markdown
Drop a .docx file here, or paste text copied from Word or Google Docs, and get Markdown with its headings, bold and italic text, lists, tables and links. Pictures are saved as files beside the .md in a .zip. The file is read inside your browser, so the document never leaves your computer.
How to turn DOCX into Markdown
- Add the document. Let go of the .docx over the converter, choose Open file, or paste text copied from Word.
- Read the result. The Markdown appears with a preview tab; any part the conversion could not keep is named under it.
- Take it away. Copy the Markdown, download it, or continue in the Markdown editor.
Typical uses: moving documentation into a Git repository or a wiki, putting a report into a static site, or giving a document to a tool that reads Markdown. For the opposite direction, from Markdown or a chat answer to Word, use Markdown to Word.
What stays behind in Word
- Look and layout: fonts, sizes, colours, columns, page breaks, headers and footers.
- Review marks: comments are dropped; tracked insertions are kept as text.
- Footnotes become a numbered list at the end, linked from the text.
- Text boxes, shapes and charts are not carried over; charts saved as pictures are.
- Old Windows pictures (EMF, WMF) cannot be shown by a browser, so they are skipped and the converter says how many.
- Equations from Word’s equation editor are not converted.
What the converter does

- Bullets as - or *
- Notes on anything the conversion could not keep

Questions
How can I turn a Word document into Markdown?
Bring the .docx in by dragging it onto the converter, or with Open file. The Markdown appears on the right, with a preview one tab away. Copy it, or press Download Markdown for a .md file, or a .zip when the document has pictures.
Does it convert DOCX to Markdown, and older .doc files?
It reads .docx, the format Word has used since 2007, and .docx files saved by LibreOffice, Pages or Google Docs. Old .doc files are a different format: open them in Word or LibreOffice, save as .docx, then convert.
What happens to pictures in the document?
Each picture is saved as its own file under images/, and the Markdown links to it, as in . The download is then a .zip with the .md file and the images folder. Choose Pictures: Leave out for Markdown with text only.
Can I paste from Word or Google Docs instead?
Yes. Copy the part you need in Word or Google Docs and paste it into the box below the drop area. The formatting on the clipboard is used, cleaned of Word’s hidden styles, so headings and lists still come through.
Why did my headings come out as bold text?
Headings are recognised by Word’s heading styles (Heading 1, Heading 2…). Text that was only made large and bold looks like a heading but is a normal paragraph to Word, so it stays one. Apply the heading styles in Word and convert again.
What does Markdown lose from a Word file?
Fonts, colours, page layout, headers and footers, comments and text boxes. Tracked changes come out as the text with the insertions. Footnotes move to a numbered list at the end. Merged table cells are split back into simple rows.
